Kilmore Quay RNLI launched on Sunday evening to assist two people aboard a yacht that was taking on water in Kilmore Quay Harbour. The volunteer crew were attending the annual Blessing of the Boats ceremony when the Irish Coast Guard requested the launch of the all-weather Tamar class lifeboat RNLB Killarney at 5.20 pm.
The yacht had recently arrived in the marina after sustaining damage en route to Kilmore Quay and had taken on a significant amount of water.
After confirming that both people on board were safe and well, the lifeboat crew assessed the situation and deployed a salvage pump in an effort to reduce the flooding. Given the extent of the water ingress, the decision was made to move the yacht to the slipway, where it could be safely lifted from the water by a local marine engineering company.
Once the vessel was secured ashore, the lifeboat returned to its berth and was made ready for service.
The crew then rejoined the harbour ceremony, where parish priest Fr Pat Mernagh completed the day's Blessing of the Boats with a special blessing for the lifeboat and its volunteer crew.
