The event, held on 6 June, marked the end of Volunteers' Week and highlighted the role volunteers play in preserving history and supporting young people. Across two sessions, the cadets explored the historic warship with IWM volunteer guides. They learned about life at sea during HMS Belfast's operational service and the sense of community shared by its crew.
The group also heard first-hand experiences from former Royal Navy submariner and ex-Sea Cadet Mike Allen, who shared insights from his naval career.
A creative workshop invited participants to produce self-portraits, which were combined to form a new HMS Belfast crew. The artwork created a modern interpretation of the ship's company through the eyes of today's generation. Organisers said the activity encouraged young people to reflect on their own experiences, ambitions and future opportunities.

Sea Cadets Chief Executive Guy Holloway said the visit demonstrated the value of learning from volunteers and connecting with history. "Sea Cadets is about helping young people grow in confidence, resilience and teamwork," he said. "On HMS Belfast, they're not just seeing history — they're learning directly from volunteers who are passionate about preserving it. That connection between generations reflects everything we stand for and shows young people what they're capable of."
The event also highlighted the role of intergenerational storytelling, the contribution of volunteers in bringing history to life and the confidence-building opportunities offered through Sea Cadets.
