Carrickfergus residents have complained to local councillors about the smell of rotting seaweed coming from the Co Antrim town’s drains.

As the News Letter reports, DUP Alderman Billy Ashe raised the matter at a recent meeting of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Neighbourhoods and Communities Committee.

Addressing the same meeting, a council officer noted that the authority has “no obligation” regarding the removal of seaweed from the Carrick shore on Belfast Lough.

But the officer also acknowledged that seaweed is “an ongoing problem” affecting the area’s potential for bathing water status.
