Halfway through East Down Yacht Club's six-week Icicle Series, Jacub Ozarek and Abbie Stocking, sailing a 29er, lead the good-sized handicap fleet of over 20 with an IlCA 7 (P Hamilton) in second place. Third is another ILCA 7 sailed by Sam Kelly.
The fleet comprises various dinghies, including a GP 14, Wayfarers, ILCAs, a 29er, and RS 400s.
The Series began during the icy snap on 4th January, with temperatures below freezing. The lack of a breeze meant abandonment of Race 1.
Week 2 and Races 3 and 4 saw 24 boats racing in a Southerly of 12 – 14 knots, resulting in very competitive starts and some capsizes. Despite these complications, these two races were completed.
Last Saturday, Races 5 and 6 drew 17 boats to the line, and despite the forecast inclement weather, the South Easterly in the mid-teens gave exciting racing. The competition will be fierce with just four points separating the top three and three more meetings to go.
