Northern Ireland councils on the banks of Strangford Lough are backing a feasibility study for a proposed new bridge across the waterway.
According to The Irish News, the £300 million bridge would replace the existing car ferry and slash the road journey between Portaferry and Strangford — currently 50 miles around the Ards Peninsula.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council unanimously agreed last week to request funding for the study, following a similar motion passed by Ards and North Down Borough Council.
But both sides are realistic about the “financial constraints” within the NI Department for Infrastructure.
