After seven days of racing, Cork Harbour solo sailor Jakub Ziemkiewicz has finished ninth in line honours in his home-built 5.8-metre yacht Bibi on the 600-mile McIntyre 580 Globe Transat qualifier from Portugal to Lanzarote.

After years of building in backyards and garages around the world and frantic final preparations, safety checks, and briefings at Marina de Lagos Portugal, ten men and two women sailors set sail on Saturday, 28th December, on the first stage of a 28,000-mile solo odyssey around the world onboard ALMA Globe 580 home-built plywood 19ft yachts. Four more will join Antigua.

The third edition of the Globe 580 Transat Race is a qualifying transatlantic race for the Mini Globe Race, a five-stage solo round-the-world race which kicks off on February 23 from Antigua.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
