Clinton Takes Over As Canoeing Ireland President
# CANOEING: Mark Clinton has been elected as the new president of Canoeing Ireland. The Salmon Leap member takes over after what he says were “turbulent” times in recent years. The executive resigned in December and the new president comes in with a major reform programme.
The plans, which were passed by delegates at a recent Annual Delegate Meeting which lasted over six hours, will see regional representatives take up four board posts. Chairs of the disciplines which make up the sport will no longer be automatic members of the board. The restructuring must await a new ADM or egm.
Wesley Burke, William Irwin, Kim Siekerman and Jenny Kilbride were also elected at this year’s ADM.
Clinton is a company director and former Army officer. His father served as Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries from 1973 to 1977.
Meanwhile, the head office of Canoeing Ireland is moving to the National Sports Campus in Blanchardstown.
Ireland Junior Canoeists Get First Taste of World Championships Fare
# CANOEING: Ireland’s three junior competitors all completed the testing course on the river Tiber in Rome at the Canoe Marathon World Championships today. Sean McCarthy took 22nd place in the junior K1, and Mark Hartnett 32nd. Cait Broderick took 21st in the women’s event.
Ireland’s senior competitors, Jenny and Peter Egan, will compete tomorrow.
In the Masters events, which preceded the World Championships, Malcolm Banks finished fourth and Deaglan O Drisceoil fifth.

Blind Canoeist to Paddle Length of River Shannon for Charity
#canoe – A blind journalist, canoeist and past pupil at ChildVision's national education centre for blind children will paddle the River Shannon in aid of ChildVision this weekend. Wesley Bourke and his paddling partner Aisa Cooper will take on the 360km (225 mile) feat from August 16th-19th, covering 100km per day for the first three days. The challenge will begin at Dowra in County Cavan and cover the counties of Leitrim, Roscommon, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Galway, Clare and Tipperary as they make their way to Limerick.
"No blind person has ever done this before but I'm confident we'll not only complete the challenge, but we'll get it done on schedule," said Bourke. "And ChildVision really deserves every support you can give them, and I hope everyone along the route will be generous in supporting them, and us, too."
Wesley was diagnosed with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy at a eighteen while he was completing an apprenticeship with the Air Corp, leaving him with less than 15% vision. He attended ChildVision's integrated post-primary school, Pobal Scoil Rosmini, to complete his Leaving Certificate. Graduating in 1998 Wesley went on to study International relations at the University of Hull and Kings College London. He now works as a journalist at An Cosantóir, the Defence Forces magazine.
An adventure enthusiast, Wesley recently completed the Devizes – Westminster International Canoeing Marathon with Aisa, paddling over 200km in a two man kayak in preparation for this event. Wesley and Aisa are members of the Celbridge Paddlers Canoe Club, Co. Kildare.
The pair will take to the Shannon in a K2 kayak on August 16th to raise funds for ChildVision, Ireland's only national education centre for blind children. ChildVision works with over 800 families throughout the country providing educational resources and facilities for blind children.
Craig's Hopes End in K1 Canoe Slalom Final
#canoe – Antrim woman Hannah Craig's hopes of a medal in the K1 slalom canoe final ended this afternoon when she hit three gates on the way down in her bid for glory.
Craig was first into the water in the final but hitting gates five, nine and 16 cost her a six-second penalty and she finished with a time of 127.36 well outside of the medal times.
Two Kayakers Washed Ashore
Two kayakers on the Irish Sea were given medical attention this evening after abandoning their kayaks whilst out at sea off Morfa Nefyn and spending three hours in the water trying to make it back to shore.
North Wales Ambulance Control contacted Holyhead Coastguard at 10.06 pm to report that a member of the public had called to inform them that two kayakers had knocked on their door asking if they could come inside to warm up after being in the water, and that they potentially needed medical attention. Holyhead Coastguard sent the Porthdinllaen Coastguard Rescue Team to meet the casualties to find out what had happened and assist in locating their kayaks.
Once on scene, the coastguard rescue team reported back to the Operations Room that the two male kayakers (one aged 23 and one aged 24) had set out from Morfa Nefyn beach at 7pm, had gone out approximately half a mile and then panicked, abandoned the kayaks and been washed ashore. When they finally made it ashore just before 10pm, they knocked on the door of a nearby house to ask for help and an ambulance was called. The coastguard rescue team spoke to the two casualties and the kayaks were recovered.

Barry Priddis, Holyhead Coastguard Watch Manager said:
"Although this incident contains a catalogue of errors that we would warn against, the fact that these two kayakers were both wearing lifejackets undoubtedly saved their lives tonight. We always advise members of the public not to go out on the water in conditions or distances that are beyond their capability, and if they do find themselves in such a situation, to call the Coastguard and ask for help. Attempting to swim ashore is very dangerous, especially with outside temperatures as they are at the moment and had these two not been wearing lifejackets which kept them afloat we could be looking at a very different outcome."
Heurteau's London 2012 Bid Comes Up Short at Canoe Slalom World Championships
Ireland’s Ciaran Heurteau finished 28th in the K1 semi-finals at the Canoe Slalom World Championships this morning in Bratislava in Slovakia. The top 10 go to the final, but a place in the top 15 countries would have qualified the boat for London 2012. Heurteau’s placing fell outside this mark.

Full Ireland Team In Action Tomorrow at Slalom Worlds
Organisers at the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Bratislava today cancelled racing for a second day due to weather concerns. The new schedule (printed IN FULL below) sites both the women’s and men’s K1 heats tomorrow (Friday). Ireland’s Hannah Craig and Aisling Conlon will compete in the morning, while Eoin Rheinisch, Ciaran Heurteau and Patrick Hynes have heats in the afternoon.

Conlon and Craig Must Do It Again at Slalom World Championships
Organisers of the Focus Ireland Triathlon in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday 31 July have announced a list of road closures in the area, and have also put out a call for volunteers to assist on the day.
Full road closures will be necessary from 7.45am to 11am in the Blackrock, Monkstown and Dun Laoghaire areas. A complete list plus a map of road closures and diversions are available to download below.
Meanwhile, volunteers are required to assist in all aspects of the event. Canoeists and kayakers are especially needed for safety support during the swimming section of the race.
Anyone who has some time to help out on the day, or who can supply canoes or kayaks for the event, is urged to contact events assistant Anne Griffin at [email protected].
Entries are still open for the Focus Ireland Triathlon, which comprises a 750m/350m swim, a 20k cycle and a 5k run. Registration is €80 for individuals/€240 for teams and entries can be made at www.focusireland.ie. For more details call 1850 204 205 or e-mail [email protected].
A member of the renowned Salmon Leap club in Leixlip, Jenny's path to success was evident at an early stage with her performances at junior level placing 15th and 5th in successive years, and then claiming a silver medal at the 2005 World Junior Marathon Championships in Perth, Australia. Since entering the senior ranks in 2006, Jenny has made steady and encouraging progress, gaining her first medal with a bronze at the British Senior National Marathon Championship and achieving a ranking of 15th in Europe in the Under-23 category in her first year.
Her big breakthrough came last year at the Senior Sprint Canoe World Cup in Szeged, Hungary where she took silver in the 5,000m becoming the first Irish female sprint canoeist to win a medal of any colour, and only missed out on gold by just six seconds to winner, Renata Csay of Hungary.
Jenny's strong performances so far this year, saw her take a silver medal at the World Cup 2 race in the Czech Rep. The 5000m event is one of the most popular of all in championships. This was no exception; quickly a group of 5 girls broke from the field headed by Lani Belcher, Great Britain, Jenny Egan, Anna Adamova, Czech Republic and Kristina Zur of the USA. The Austrian, Anna Lehaci, could not keep up with the pace. So it was a four person fight for the medals. However, due to a miscalculation the bell for the final lap was sounded early confusing the athletes leading the race. Eventually all the athletes completed the full distance with Lani Belcher (GBR) sprinting to the Gold medal. Due to the confusion two silver medals were given to Adamova and Egan with Bronze going to Zur.
With Jenny's medal tally on the international canoeing circuit beginning to rack up, it is only a matter of time before she makes the biggest leap on the podium to gold medal position with the support of her family, especially her brother and former canoeing international Peter. The DCU sports science graduate joins, jockey Nina Carberry, Irish Irish female rugby captain Fiona Coghlan, golfing twins Lisa and Leona Maguire and cross country runner Fionnuala Britton in the race for the overall accolade of The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Year 2011.
Established in 2004, the aim of the Sports Woman of the Year awards is to recognise the abilities and achievements of women in Irish sports. The awards run over a twelve month period, with the judges selecting a winner each month for her ability to excel at sport. From the twelve monthly winners, the overall Sportswoman of the Year is selected and announced.
