Jonas Warrer is closing in on the leaders at the 49er World Championships in Cagliari, Italy.
The 46-year-old Dane and crew, Mathias Lehm Sletten, posted scores of 2-2-1 to jump into third overall. Warrer, the 2008 Olympic gold medallist, showed no signs of easing off. “We’re just taking it one race at a time,” he said after racing in heavy breeze.
Spain’s Diego Botín and Florian Trittel still lead the fleet heading into the medal series. The Olympic champions kept their advantage despite pressure from behind.
Dutch pairing Bart Lambriex van Aanholt and Floris van de Werken, three-time world champions, recorded 10-4-3. The results keep them in contention and locked into the top two.
Seven boats are fighting for the remaining two slots in the four-boat final. The Spanish and Dutch teams are already secure, leaving others to scrap for the last places.
The fleet now faces a high-stakes new type medal series with little margin for error.
Irish interest is in the silver fleet where Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove, and Ben O’Shaughnessy and Ethan Spain are competing.
