Solid Performance by Irish 49er crew

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern put in a solid performance at the annual Kiel week regatta, with a sprinking of top ten and top five results putting them 12th overall in their 59-boat fleet after nine races.

The northern pair consolidate their postion as Ireland's top crew in the class with that result. Meanwhile, 470 newcomers Thomas Chaix and Barry McCartin said they were happy with their progress on the water, if not on the scoreboard, after improvements made at Medmblik during the Delta Lloyd regatta.

Said Chaix: "Kiel showed our progress (not really on result sheet -71st/81- but definitely on the water).

"We had pace in the big breeze (20kts) and found pace at time in the light air race. We are more confident in our settings. It is a combination of bad luck (gear failures) and a couple of poor tactical decisions that kept us from a solid overall result in the 40-50s."
