Ireland's Robert Dickson and temporary crew Jack Hildebrand climbed three places to 18th overall after the second day of racing at the San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta in California.
The Irish pair, sailing together following Sean Waddilove's injury, now sit on 69 points after six races in the 31-boat 49er fleet. Their scores on Wednesday were 10th, 21st and 10th, lifting them from 21st overnight.
The second day presented sailors with a markedly different challenge from the opening races. Lighter and less predictable winds replaced the stronger sea breeze experienced on day one, rewarding crews able to adapt quickly to changing conditions.
Germany's Richard Schultheis and Fabian Rieger retained the overall lead after another consistent day. Australia's Harry Price and Max Paul moved into second overall, with France's Erwan Fischer and Clément Péquin third.
Australian helm Harry Price said the unusual start-line dynamics continued to shape racing.
"Trying to get out of the blocks pretty safe and with a nice lane to the right is generally the trend."
Crew Max Paul added that almost the entire fleet was approaching the line on port tack.
"It's about managing the traffic and the chaos. If you execute that part of the race well, you set yourself up for success."
With two days completed, competitors have now experienced two very different versions of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic racecourse, providing valuable preparation ahead of the Games.
