#NAVAL SERVICE – Within a space of seven days the Naval Service OPV L.E. Roisin (P51) detained two foreign registered fishing vessels for alleged breaches of fishing regulations.

The most recent detainment was on Tuesday where a UK registered trawler was approximately 33 nautical miles off Mizen Head, Co. Kerry. The detained vessel was escorted to Castletownbere and handed over to the Gardai.

As previously reported on Afloat.ie the other detention took place last week where a Spanish fishing vessel was 150 miles south-west off Co. Clare. and likewise the trawler was escorted to Castletownbere.

To date the Naval Service have carried out 426 boardings, issued 17 warnings and detained four vessels so far in 2012. The navy last year carried out 1,313 boardings and eight detentions of vessels off the Irish Coast.

This Saturday a memorial service will be held in Bray Co. Wicklow to honour all those, who for whatever reason, have lost their lives at sea, especially those whose last resting place is the sea which claimed their lives.
Floral tributes will be taken out to sea by a flotilla which is to include a Naval Service RIB-craft, the Naval Reserve, the RNLI Dun Laoghaire inshore-lifeboat, Civil Defence, Coast Guard, fishing vessels and pleasure craft.

Those participating are asked to assemble at the Hibernia Inn (near Bray Dart Station) from 13.00 hours. At 14.00 hours, an anchor shaped wreath will lead the procession of wreaths to the north Bray pier-head where a memorial service will be held, at which representatives of those in attendance will be invited to speak.

This will be followed by one minute's silence after which, those accompanying the wreaths will embark on the flotilla to a position approximately five-cables due east of Bray Harbour.

Robert Dickson & Sean Waddilove, Tokyo Olympic 49er Sailors 

Dublin dinghy sailors Robert Dickson of Howth Yacht Club and Sean Waddilove of Skerries Sailing Club achieved their goal of representing Ireland in the 49er class, almost six years to the day after first setting foot in a 49er skiff at their home club of Howth Yacht Club in County Dublin in 2015.

The voyage was a magnificent one becoming U23 World champions in 2018 before out sailing rivals double Olympian Ryan Seaton and Seafra Guilfoyle in some style for selection in Lanzarote in March 2021 to win the last European Olympic place for Tokyo.
