The 2025 Cobh to Blackrock Race is gearing up for a busy weekend in Cork Harbour this Saturday (6th September), where big wind weather forecasts indicate a fast edition of the annual fixture.

More than 30 boats have already registered, with expectations for even more participants. The race will begin at the Old Yacht Club in Cobh, navigating upriver to finish at Blackrock Castle.

Early forecasts show south-easterly winds gusting to over 30 knots for the 12 km voyage, which could yet prove challenging in the narrows and at Lough Mahon.

Race Officer Niall Hawes said, “We encourage skippers to enter early to help manage the multiple results.” A strong south-easterly breeze is predicted, promising potentially fast conditions for competitors.

The event features separate classes for kites and whites, promoting a diverse competitive environment. Results will be calculated using both IRC and ECHO handicaps.

There will be no dinghy division this year.

As Afloat reported recently, this race marks the first leg of the new “Triple Crown” Harbour Series, jointly organised by the Royal Cork Yacht Club and Cove Sailing Club. An additional team competition is included, with six teams entered thus far.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
