Dun Laoghaire and its mighty artificial harbour sit so comfortably into the south side of Dublin Bay that it’s not unknown for enthusiasts to refer to the totally artificial structure as “this wonderful natural feature of our local coastline”.
Architectural historian and antiques expert Peter Pearson probably knows more than anyone else how a semi-wild and exposed piece of coastline was transformed into one of the most the valuable and useful areas of real estate in Ireland.
One of his many books was the co-authorship with Stella Archer of The History of the Royal St George Yacht Club for its Sesquicentennial in 1988, giving his knowledge of the built environment in Dun Laoghaire an acute awareness of how it all
interacts with the sea and seafaring and sailing sport.
He’ll be telling the Dublin Bay Old Gaffers Association about all this in the Poolbeg Yacht & Boat Club on Thursday, April 16th, admission free but generous contributions to the Lifeboat expected at the door.
Architectural historian Peter Pearson will outline how Dún Laoghaire’s harbour was created at a Dublin Bay Old Gaffers Association talk on April 16 at Poolbeg Yacht Club
