Successful Howth owner-skipper Mike Evans believes in being busy afloat and ashore. Until recently, most of his winter sailing was being done in an RS400. But in the current HYC programme - 48 boats racing in the current New Year half of the Golden Jubilee-celebrating HYC Dinghy Frostbites - he's been skating around in one of the new Melges 15s.

As for his offshore racing, it was known the podium placer J/99 Snapshot was available for serious punters. And now - as smoothly as silk - Snapshot has departed the scene, to be replaced by a one-year-old J/112e from Estonia, providing a direct challenge for Volvo Cork Week's overall champion, Johnny Treanor's sister-ship ValenTina from the National YC.
