The growth of the 420 dinghy class at the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven is "amazing", the club's annual general meeting was told on Tuesday night (Jan 14).
In her report to the members, Rear Admiral Dinghies Yvonne Durcan said the Mixed Dinghy fleet, which was created to get more sailors onto the water, "continued to grow so much that we now have a well-established new Feva Class with 12 boats in total and an ever-expanding 420 class with 12 boats. While detrimental to other classes, this is amazing growth going forward.
The 420s ran a series of coaching sessions which saw new members join our club to become involved in the same. In fact, the class has grown so quickly that we have sailors travelling to international events already."
However, in contrast, the Rear Admiral reported that "numbers are declining in the Topper Class and this is something that needs to be addressed."
The Optimist Class continues to grow.
Amongst the tasks identified for this year were a re-defining of the progression pathway for youth sailors, re-establishing the Cadet Club and the Cork Dinghy Fest scheduled for July.
