With the world-beating Laser/ILCA Class’s recent much-celebrated achievement of its Golden Jubilee, there is now very serious competition in the various Masters Divisions, with the main focus on the Grand Masters. Mark Lyttle of the National YC – a sailor who has given at least as much to sailing as sailing has gifted him – hit the headlines back in 2018 when he won that title on his original home waters of Dublin Bay.

But now, eight years later, the spark is as bright as ever, and he won the ILCA Grand Masters with a dominant final day’s showing on “strange waters” at Athens in June 2026, providing a very fitting Afloat.ie Sailor of the Month (Dinghies) for June.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
