The Galeón Andalucía has arrived in Derry for the first time as part of its 2026 European tour. The 55-metre replica Spanish galleon is berthed at Meadowbank Quay and will be open to visitors from June 24 to June 28 during the Foyle Maritime Festival.
Built by Spain's Fundación Nao Victoria, the vessel recreates the famous galleons that linked Andalusia with the Americas and Asia for more than three centuries. The ship is intended to showcase the maritime heritage of Andalusia and the role the region played in global exploration and trade.
Age of Sail: Crew members work aloft aboard the Galeón Andalucía as the historic replica demonstrates the sailing traditions of the Spanish galleons that connected Europe, the Americas and Asia for more than three centuries
Constructed from iroko and pine timber, the vessel features six decks and carries almost 1,000 square metres of sail across seven sails.
Since its launch, the Galeón Andalucía has logged hundreds of thousands of nautical miles, visiting ports across Europe, North America and Asia, including London, Liverpool, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila, New York and Quebec.
Organisers describe the ship as a floating ambassador for Andalusian culture and tourism. During its stay in Derry, visitors will be able to explore the vessel's decks and learn about life aboard the historic ocean-going ships that connected continents during the age of sail.
The visit forms part of a wider European programme taking in ports across France, Britain, Ireland and Northern Europe. Advance booking is recommended, with organisers advising that online ticket holders will receive priority access should visitor demand exceed capacity.
