Silver McMahon So Close to Boys Euro Title, Hopkins Ninth in Girls Fleet at Laser Youths Portugal

27th July 2015

#laseryouth – First elation, then disappointment and then consolation that a very solid performance by Howth Yacht Club's Ewan McMahon had only narrowly missed out on the boy's European (under 17) Laser Radial title in Portugal at the weekend. The 16-year–old–Dubliner was initially recorded as the winner in Viano do Castelo but he lost first place as a result of a protest and finished second overall, earning a significant silver medal in his youth sailing career.

It is the second strong international performance from the HYC teenager this month. McMahon travelled to Warnemünde in Germany for the Laser Europa Cup from 4th - 7th July 2015 and finished third overall and 1st Under-17.

Club mate Aoife Hopkins from Howth was ninth IN Portugal and first Irish girl.

The Howth sailor reported that she was pleased with how she sailed over a huge range of conditions but admitted seasickness got to her on the fifth day with the massive swell. Unfortunately she was just one point off a prize (top 8 in the 82 boat fleet).
