Fifteen people have been rescued after their boats capsized in strong winds during the RYA Youth Nationals in Pwllheli, as BBC News reports.
The incident occurred off Plas Heli at 1.30pm on Wednesday afternoon (16 April) when a sudden and rapid weather change resulted in high winds on the course where the 29er youth fleet was racing.
All involved in the mass capsize were recovered from the water and brought safely to shore, as confirmed by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency. All but one of their vessels were also recovered.
In a statement on the incident, the RYA thanked the event’s “on-site staff, volunteers and emergency services for their swift and coordinated response”.
The RYA added that one adult safety crew volunteer sustained a head injury during the rescue efforts and was taken to hospital for treatment and monitoring before later being discharged.
The five-day regatta was officially opened by Princess Anne on Tuesday (15 April), as previously reported on Afloat.ie.
