More than 400 sailors have already confirmed their places for the 2026 Youth Sailing World Championships, with six months remaining before racing begins in Portugal. A total of 424 sailors and 146 coaches from 65 nations have registered for the championship, which returns to Marina de Vilamoura in Loulé from 15-19 December after successfully hosting the 2025 edition.

The event will feature 11 medal events across male, female and mixed categories, following an Olympic-style format that brings together the world's leading youth sailors. Several classes have already reached capacity, including the boys' and mixed 29er and 420 fleets, along with the boys' iQFOiL and ILCA 6 events. Only a limited number of places remain in several female classes.

World Sailing CEO David Graham welcomed the strong response. "The popularity of the Youth Sailing World Championship is incredibly positive for the sport," he said.

"As the premier youth event in our sport, this event is a key part of the journey for young sailors and, just over two years out from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, many competitors will be hoping to impress and earn the opportunity to represent their nation." He added that World Sailing was pleased to continue working with Vilamoura Sailing and the municipality of Loulé following the success of last year's championship.

Vilamoura Sailing and Prow Group CEO Nuno Reis said hosting the event for a second successive year reflected confidence in the venue's ability to stage a world-class championship. "For more than 50 years, the Youth Sailing World Championships have been the pinnacle of youth sailing performance," he said, describing the regatta as an important pathway for future world and Olympic champions.

Sustainability will again be a major focus. Organisers say the venue is powered by solar energy, with efforts to eliminate single-use plastics, reduce paper through digital communications and promote reusable materials and environmentally friendly support boats.

The championship is being organised by World Sailing in partnership with Vilamoura Sailing, the Portuguese Sailing Federation, the Municipality of Loulé and a range of local and national organisations.
