Anglers in Northern Ireland have been advised not to eat any fish caught in Co Antrim’s Six Mile Water, which feeds into Lough Neagh, for the foreseeable future.

As BBC News reports, Antrim & District Angling Association (ADAA) posted the advice for its members on social media following news that scientists at Queen’s University Belfast found potentially harmful microbes in the algae blooms that plagued Lough Neagh in the summer of 2023.

While there has been no formal warning regarding consumption of fish from this waterway, ADAA chair Maurice Parkinson said a recent resurgence of toxic blue-green algae in Lough Neagh has prompted his organisation to be “ultra-cautious”.
