St Michael’s Rowing Club hosted a major offshore rowing training event in Dún Laoghaire Harbour on Sunday, bringing together clubs and coastal rowing groups from across the harbour community.
The event focused on offshore FISA rowing boats and was led by world champion offshore rower Eskil Borgh.
Rowers from St Michael’s Rowing Club, Triton Rowing Club and the Royal St George Yacht Club took part in the sessions. Training covered coastal sculling techniques, race preparation, boat handling and open-water safety.
The sheltered waters of Dún Laoghaire Harbour provided ideal conditions for the offshore sessions, while the event also highlighted growing interest in coastal rowing ahead of its increased international profile.

Borgh shared elite-level coaching with athletes of different backgrounds and experience levels. Offshore rowing is one of the fastest-growing disciplines within World Rowing and is expected to feature more prominently in future Olympic competition formats.
Event organisers Simone Sav and Gavin Kirk said the aim was to strengthen links between harbour clubs and introduce more athletes to offshore rowing. “This event was about bringing the rowing community together and exposing more local members to the exciting opportunities within offshore rowing,” they said. “Having someone of Eskil Borgh’s calibre coaching in Dún Laoghaire was an incredible experience for everyone involved.”
