Irish Olympic rower Paul O’Donovan has been named RTÉ Sport’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2024 for his outstanding achievements on the water this year.

O’Donovan became the first Irish athlete to medal at three different Olympics when he and his rowing partner Fintan McCarthy retained their Olympic title in the men's lightweight double sculls at Paris 2024.

The former also triumphed solo with gold in the single sculls at the World Rowing Championships.

The Skibbereen rower was presented with his award at a gala ceremony in Dublin on Sunday evening (15 December).

And speaking about his remarkable accolades, O’Donovan credits his rowing partners for playing a big part in his success.

“I like the sport, for one, that helps, I have had some good teammates over the years and that helps get the results,” he said.
