Super-sized North Atlantic swells have been driving big waves at such hotspots Nazaré in Portugal — and Mullaghmore Head in Co Sligo, where Irish surfing star Conor Maguire was among those last week taking on walls of water “almost as big as it gets”.

Speaking to Surfer magazine, he said: “These waves are f---ing nuts so pretty happy to lock into one on my first wave. Thanks to Dylan [Stott] for putting me in the spot.”

Maguire added: “It’s crazy just trying to get ready for something like this, mentally, when you know the charts are absolutely insane. It’s not quite as big as the day we had five years ago but you never know what it’s going to be like when there’s numbers like that in the charts.”
