Mayo Sailing Club's Joan Mulloy has signed up for the 2024 Double Handed World Offshore Championships in September.

That adds to a busy sailing schedule as she is also looking forward to the next stage of 'The Famous Project' in which she is one of the crew of ten women who are to start training on the 100ft. trimaran on which they intend to attempt a world record in the winter of next year.

The 100-foot legendary trimaran has won the Route du Rhum three times and held the Jules Verne Trophy since 2017. The women's crew will attempt a new record. They have been training and sailing on a 70-foot trimaran up to now.

As previously reported on Afloat, the 100-footer has been returned to the water after five months of work.

"The main focus is to continue training with 'The Famous Project', and I have signed up for the double-handed championships," she says on this Podcast below, discussing the different approaches to sailing needed to deal with the scale of challenges in the trimaran.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
