Tributes have been paid by Irish Coast Guard crews to the late advanced coxswain Caitríona Lucas on the tenth anniversary of her death.
Ms Lucas (41) died on September 12th, 2016, at University Hospital Limerick after the rigid inflatable boat (RIB) which she was assisting with on a search capsized off Co Clare.
A highly experienced member of the Doolin unit, she had offered to assist the neighbouring Kilkee Coast Guard unit, which was conducting an ongoing search for a missing person and was short of volunteers.
Ms Lucas and two other volunteers, both members of the Kilkee unit, were thrown off the Kilkee RIB, and she suffered a head injury, which left her unconscious in the water for up to 17 minutes.
The 2023 inquest jury into her death issued a ruling of misadventure and made seven recommendations on safety management by the Irish Coast Guard, including a review of the suitability of all safety gear, including helmets.
Michael Kingston, solicitor for the Lucas family, had urged a verdict of unlawful killing but coroner John McNamara ruled this was outside the scope for the jury to consider.
The Crosshaven Irish Coast Guard unit echoed the thoughts of volunteers around the coast when it said on social media:
"Today on the 10th anniversary of her passing we remember our Irish Coast Guard colleague Caitríona Lucas who died while on duty responding to an incident to help in the search for a missing person.
Bunbeg Coast Guard in Donegal said:
“Caitríona tragically lost her life that day, working to return someone to their family. Go mairidís beo..”
Our thoughts are with her family, friends and Coast Guard colleagues who continue to cherish her memory. Go mairidís beo."
