The "mood music" in the fishing industry is better than it was, but the industry must be determined and needs continuing, strong political support, according to the Managing Director of one of the country's biggest seafood processors, Donagh Good.

One of the youngest MDs in the country, at the age of 34, in charge of the Good Fish Company, which has opened a new multi-million-euro production centre at Shanbally, near Cork Port, he says that determination is crucial to the industry's future.

Donagh Good is a sailor who was the Laser Junior National Champion in 2007 and sailed in the Student World Cup in 2011. He is a member of the RCYC.

"You have to make challenging decisions in sailing, the seafood industry is the same, lots of challenges, how you deal with them is the important thing."

The company was started by his father, Denis, a shipwright who worked on the building of the famous Moonduster for Denis Doyle and changed career to become a fishmonger. His grandfather ran a ferry service from Currabinny to Crosshaven in Cork Harbour.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
