MARA, the Maritime Area Regulatory Authority, and Wind Energy Ireland, the industry's representative organisation, are to appear before the Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs on Tuesday, (July 15). The Seafood/Offshore Renewable Energy Working Group, which includes representatives of the Irish seafood organisations, IFA Aquaculture and also representatives from the ORE industry will also be present to discuss planning challenges in Offshore Renewable Energy.
The Chairman of the Joint Committee, Deputy Conor McGuinness, said that "Ireland's maritime territory and coastal conditions "offer enormous potential for the development of offshore renewable energy to provide secure and sustainable carbon-free electricity generation. However, it is essential that Government ensures a pragmatic approach to development of this national resource that benefits coastal communities and our society as a whole."
The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs has fourteen members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
"Meaningful consultation, careful and transparent planning, consideration of our marine environment and a progressive approach that puts communities at the heart of development," are essential according to Deputy McGuinness. "The Committee looks forward to examining the challenges and opportunities that exists as part of its ongoing engagement on this topic."
The meeting will be held at 11am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House and can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
