As part of Science Week 2024, RTÉ paid a visit to Lough Ree where technological innovations are allowing people to surf without waves.
That’s thanks to the increasingly popular sport of e-foiling, which combines the classic surfboard with electric propulsion and the principles of hydrofoiling — allowing riders to fly above the surface of the water on a blade-like wing.
The efficiencies inherent to hydrofoiling — with the reduced drag in the water allowing for higher speeds from less energy — are also integral to the designs of Belfast-based Artemis Technologies, whose ‘flying’ boats have been putting the city on the green transport map.
