Calls have been made for Kerry County Council to carry out a feasibility study to examine whether Fenit Harbour could be used as a hub for offshore wind energy projects.
The deep water port has previously been used as a base for major oil and gas exploration projects off the west coast and Tralee Sinn Féin Cllr Cathal Foley believes it would be ideally suited to provide support services to offshore wind farms during and after their construction.
Cllr Foley’s call follows the news last week that Shannon Foynes Port have entered into a partnership with a major international offshore windfarm company which could see the Shannon Estuary become an international floating offshore wind power hub with Shannon Foynes Port at its centre.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Shannon Foynes management and Norwegian Offshore Wind to provide a framework for collaboration on future projects.
