Ireland will host one of Europe's leading aquaculture conferences for the first time in 37 years when Aquaculture Europe 2028 comes to Dublin, bringing international researchers, seafood producers and marine technology companies to the capital.
Dublin has been selected to host Aquaculture Europe 2028, with the international conference and trade exhibition scheduled to take place at the Convention Centre Dublin from 2–5 October 2028.
The decision, announced by the European Aquaculture Society on Monday, 12 October, marks the return of the event to Ireland for the first time since 1991.
The four-day gathering will bring together aquaculture producers, researchers, technology companies and policymakers, providing an international showcase for Ireland's seafood and aquaculture industries.
International Aquaculture Conference Returns to Ireland
The conference will be held under the theme Innovation in a Changing World: Adapting Production in Our Waters.
The programme will include scientific presentations, an international trade exhibition, industry forums, workshops and visits to aquaculture facilities.
Ireland previously hosted the event in 1991, while a planned gathering in Cork in 2020 was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The successful Dublin bid involved a range of Irish organisations, including Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), IFA Aquaculture, the Marine Institute, Atlantic Technological University, Trinity College Dublin and Goatsbridge Trout.
Opportunity for Irish Seafood and Aquatech
The announcement provides a platform for Irish salmon, shellfish, seaweed and aquaculture technology businesses to engage with international markets and research partners.
Ireland's aquaculture industry employs more than 1,700 people and has an estimated value of €210 million.
The conference also comes as Ireland's aquatech sector continues to expand, with 76 companies generating an estimated €165 million and supporting more than 900 jobs.
The sector's development has been supported by initiatives including BIM's AquaScale programme, which seeks to encourage innovation and commercial opportunities in aquaculture technology.
BIM and Irish Industry Involvement
BIM chief executive Richard Donnelly welcomed the announcement as an opportunity to promote Ireland's aquaculture industry and growing marine technology expertise.
The hosting decision also comes shortly after BIM announced the appointment of Damien Toner as its Director of Development and Innovation.
Toner is the incoming president of the European Aquaculture Society, providing a further connection between Ireland's seafood development agency and the international organisation behind the event.
Aquaculture Europe 2028 will bring together scientific research, commercial aquaculture and emerging technologies at a time when the industry is responding to environmental, regulatory and production challenges.
