A bond of over €35.4 million lodged with the Irish government as part of plans to build an offshore wind farm off Sceirde Rocks in Connemara will not be returned to the developers.
The Connacht Tribune reports that spokesperson for the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment has said that “having drawn down the security after the abandonment of the project, there is no provision for its refund to the project.”
As Afloat has previously reported, Corio Generation’s withdrawal from the 1.4 billion euro Sceirdre rocks fixed offshore wind farm project - which comedian Tommy Tiernan was among objectors to - “clearly came as a surprise to all parties involved in the project”, Údarás na Gaeltachta said earlier this year.
Corio Generation was already pulling back from its Irish venture late last year when it let a senior manager go amid reports it was seeking a buyer for the project.
The project was awarded a maritime area consent in 2022, and submitted a planning application to An Bord Pleanála in January 2025. The multinational announced in April that it was focusing on a smaller portfolio of projects globally.
“Following the abandonment of the project and in line with the terms and conditions of the ORESS contract, the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment has drawn down the performance security of approximately €35.4 million,” the department told The Connacht Tribune.
