Cork-based marine services company Green Rebel has completed a series of nearshore environmental surveys off Ireland’s south coast.
The work supports EirGrid’s Powering Up Offshore – South Coast project, aimed at connecting 900 MW of offshore wind energy to the national grid.
Green Rebel carried out the benthic sampling and video surveys using its multi-purpose vessel, Lady Kathleen, operating from its Crosshaven, Cork Harbour headquarters.
The company was contracted by Fugro, EirGrid’s appointed marine survey supplier, to carry out the surveys in Maritime Area A – known as Tonn Nua – within the Government’s South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan.
Fleet Manager Alan Cott said the successful completion highlights Green Rebel’s technical strength and local capability. “We’re proud to support Ireland’s renewable energy future with our locally-based assets and expertise,” he said.
“Ireland’s offshore energy future depends on local knowledge, local talent, and a sustainable marine industry,” he added.
The data collected will help inform the design of infrastructure needed to connect offshore wind farms to onshore substations, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Liam Ryan of EirGrid praised the coordination involved, thanking fishing communities, landowners, and project partners for supporting the survey phase.
Further survey phases, including geotechnical and UXO surveys, are planned for 2026 as the project progresses toward meeting Ireland’s renewable energy targets.
