Scotland has increased its targets for offshore wind energy to up to 40GW of generating capacity by 2035 to 2040.
This represents a significant increase on the target of 8GW to 11 GW by 2030, which had been identified in its 2020 policy statement.
It says it expects to see a “rapid growth in power demand” over the 2030s and 2040s.
An updated paper, published before the current war in the Middle East, said the new targets had the potential to attract investment and accelerate sector growth.
An eight-week consultation on the new targets took place from June 18th to August 13th 2025.
The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation has criticised the move, stating the Scottish government was more interested in the economic than environmental benefits of offshore wind expansion.
The Scottish government says it is “working to manage marine space in a way that safeguards environmental interests and supports all marine users, including our valued fishing sector, so that every sector can thrive”.
