Met Éireann announces €2.8 million in funding for six innovative university research projects aimed at advancing climate services and improving forecasting for extreme weather events such as Storm Eowyn (above) that hit Ireland in April 2025

Met Éireann has announced that it is awarding €2.8 million in funding to six new university research projects to further develop climate services and new flood forecasting models.

The awards are being made via the Met Éireann Research Call 2024 to innovative projects aimed at addressing climate change, extreme weather events and environmental sustainability.

Met Éireann’s ‘Weather and Climate Research Programme’ aims to strengthen national research capacity and scientific expertise in weather and climate, through high-impact projects.

Multi-hazard flood forecasting, extremes across climates and building resilience are themes of the projects undertaken by researchers at University of Galway, Maynooth University and University College, Cork.

“These research projects represent critical contributions to both national and international efforts to address climate change, extreme weather, and environmental sustainability,” Met Éireann director Eoin Moran said.

“As a proud supporter of innovative research, Met Éireann is committed to ongoing exploration that supports adaptive responses and strategic planning for improved climate resilience,” he said.

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.

About Afloat.ie – Weather

At Afloat.ie – Weather, we provide timely marine and coastal weather updates relevant to Ireland’s sailing, boating, fishing and watersports communities. The page features real-time reports, storm alerts, forecasts and climate-related developments that help readers stay informed about changing conditions around the Irish coast and offshore waters. From wind patterns and wave activity to severe weather advisories, our coverage draws on trusted sources such as Met Éireann and recognised maritime authorities.

We highlight significant events — like winter storms, heat anomalies or shifts in sea temperatures — with clear, accessible summaries and links to further detail when available. Our aim is to support safer maritime activity by sharing alerts, developments and relevant commentary as they arise. While we don’t generate forecasts in-house, we curate and reference authoritative information so users can quickly spot issues that may affect planning or navigation.

Readers turn to this section for storm warnings, weather-related incidents, research news and emerging climate impacts on Irish waters. It’s a practical resource for staying aware of conditions without claiming to replace official forecasting services.
