The Pure Magic Wing Regatta brings a festival of foiling to Dun Laoghaire this weekend for two days of high-octane competition in Dublin Bay on Saturday 5 and Sunday 7 July.
The fast-growing sport of wing foiling is the perfect crossover of kiteboarding, windsurfing, surfing and wake sports. Adding to versatility, the same board and foil can get you started with wake foiling.
With the outstanding efficiency of foils, everyone can experience the fun at low speeds, towed with a wide range of boats.
Why has wing foiling caught on so well? This is a question that every winger (the term used for a wing foil rider) will answer differently: the joy of flying over water is incredible, and with only a few hours of water time, you will start feeling that glide under your feet.
You’ll then progress into a world of freestyle trick riding, surfing waves, open water swells or simple free-riding on a summer’s day. You can keep it mellow or make it an adrenaline rush — the choice is yours every time you step on your board.
Whether you’re an established hand or new to the sport, the focus for this weekend’s Wing Regatta is on fun and inclusion. No matter what your skill level, there will be something for you, from a beginner session to intermediate downwind slalom racing and expression sessions, pro racing, tech talks, gear demos and more. You’ll get tips and tricks from other riders and share the excitement, not to mention cool prizes, demos and lots to do and see.
