What is the National Watersports Campus Project?

Similar to the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, the watersports campus will provide quality, public, recreational and high-performance facilities for the many watersports participants. The Campus will considerably enhance the services currently provided by more than 30 clubs and activity centres to over 50,000 annual users of the harbour.

Why has the Watersports Campus project come about now for Dun Laoghaire Harbour?

The passing of control of the harbour to DLRCC, the public appetite for a community benefitting project and the capital funding for sports infrastructure in the Project 2040 National Plan have aligned to create an opportunity to deliver this proposal.

What organisations are promoting the Watersports Campus project?

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLRCC) and the Irish Sailing Association (Irish Sailing) are the project leads, endorsed by the National Governing Bodies of other Irish watersports and clubs and activity providers.

The National Sports Policy, published in 2018, established the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) to provide Exchequer support for sports facility projects. In some cases, these may be projects where the primary objective will be to increase active participation in sport. In other cases, these may be venues where the focus is more related to high-performance sport.

What funds have been allocated to the LSSIF?

Government has allocated at least €100m over the term to 2027 to successful applicant projects.

Is the National Watersports Campus a beneficiary of the LSSIF?

The Watersports Campus was one of seven successful applicants for Stream 1 funding allowing planning to commence on the project design and feasibility. €442,000 has been granted in this phase.

What are the key elements of the Watersports Campus project?

The project will provide for a municipally-owned public access facility to include a small craft slipway that is accessible at all stages of the tide (currently none in public ownership in the greater Dublin area), storage and lock-up resources, watersports event management space, a high-performance centre and NGB accommodation.

What other benefits are envisaged with the Watersports Campus?

The project aims to enhance the profile of Dun Laoghaire as a major international venue for maritime events, shows and conferences. Establish Dun Laoghaire as the 'go-to place' for anything marine – generating revenues Create employment in the county - attract businesses, visitors and events Grow the market for watersports Promote the services of activity providers to the public. Complement the plan to develop Dun Laoghaire as a 'destination.'

What are the next steps in the Campus project?

As of January 1 2021, The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has approved the applicant project and DLRCC are expected to appoint a team to further advance the project.

Kenny and O'Donovan A Pair Apart at Skibbereen Regatta

#ROWING: Niall Kenny and Mark O’Donovan, who as a lightweight pair will represent Ireland this season, were outstanding winners of the division one men’s pair at Skibbereen Regatta today. Denise Walsh and Andy Harrington showed the strength of under-23 rowing by winning the division one single sculls finals. UCC’s men and Trinity’s women won the division one quadruple sculls finals.

St Michael's Women's Eight Shine at Skibbereen Regatta

# ROWING: SKIBBEREEN REGATTA: St Michael’s won the big prize in the morning session of finals at Skibbereen Regatta at the National Rowing Centre. The women’s senior eight of Jessica O’Keeffe, Aoife Leahy, Emily Tormey, Alice O’Sullivan, Kate O’Brien, Ailish Sheehan, Orla McEvoy, Hannah O’Sullivan and cox Conor McGowan saw off UCD to win well in the final eFlow Grand League Regatta of the season. The crew may be further strengthened by Sinead Jennings and Sheila Clavin, whose bid to win the double sculls was derailed with surprising aplomb by Helen Walshe and Eimear Moran of Three Castles. St Michael’s also won the women’s coxed four, and the men’s pair through Kevin O’Connor and Mike O’Brien.

John Keohane was untroubled in his win in the men’s single sculls and UCC had good wins in the coxed four and the Division Two eights, where their novice crew won a battle with the UCD novice eight.

Skibbereen started the day with a win, though in an unexpected fashion: their senior women’s quadruple broke an oar, but the juniors stepped up to win the A Final.

Skibbereen Regatta Rescheduled to Create Bumper Rowing Weekend

# ROWING: Skibbereen Regatta was today given a new posting of Sunday, June 30th, opening up the prospect of a bumper weekend of rowing at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. Skibbereen Regatta was originally to open the eFlow Grand League Series but had to be postponed because of poor weather. It will now end the series, directly following Cork Regatta on the Saturday. The Irish Schools’ Regatta, also rescheduled, will begin three days of action at the NRC on Friday, June 28th.

The new date for Skibbereen became available because Fermoy Regatta cancelled, citing flood relief works on the traditional course.

Skibbereen and Universities' Regatta Fall Foul of Weather

# ROWING: Skibbereen Regatta and the Irish Universities’ and Schools’ Championships, scheduled for Sunday and Saturday respectively, have been postponed. Faced with the forecast of high winds and rain at the National Rowing Centre, the organisers of both events opted to seek a new date. The Domestic Events Committee of Rowing Ireland will make any decision on a new position in the calendar for the regattas.

Skibbereen Regatta was set to open the eFlow Grand League series. The event had a huge entry and was to run from 7.15 am to 6.15 pm.

The first Grand League rowing regatta of the season, hosted by Skibbereen at the National Rowing Centre in Cork, came successfully through a bout of fog. The fastest crew on the day were the University of Limerick/Garda senior eight, while John Keohane of Lee Valley and Becky Quinn of Three Castles were the fastest single scullers.
