#Fishing - "The marine equivalent of fracking" is how one Irish MEP has described the practice of ‘pulse fishing’ recently greenly by the European Parliament’s fisheries committee.

As TheJournal.ie reports, pulse fishing is a largely untested method of fishing that uses special nets threaded with electrical wires that ‘stun’ fish out of the seabed.

Developed in the Netherlands in 1992, that country is the biggest supporter of the method, amid claims that it uses almost half the energy of traditional trawling and provides for a bigger catch in shorter trips, as well as causing less damage to the seabed.

But Sinn Féin MEP and fisheries committee member Liadh Ní Riada echoed growing concerns over its untested nature, while the Irish Wildlife Trust signalled that the “development of industrial electrocution of marine life is a further indicator of chronic overfishing of our waters.”

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
