#SEA SHANTY FESTIVAL – Want to hear plenty of sea shanties and at the same time support the RNLI, then Rosses Point, Co. Sligo is the place to be during the three-day Sea Shanty & Maritime Festival held between the15-17th June.

This will be the third time that the coastal village is to host the festival, which to those who have attended previously will let you know is a great occasion, with lots of fun, a great atmosphere and a great standard of music, poetry, song and performances.

For this forthcoming festival there will be an increased number of overseas acts and added new dimensions to the festivals activities. The main festival concert will be held on 16th June at the Yeats Country Hotel featuring acts from Norway and several from the UK. Likewise this venue is to raise funds for the RNLI which is to hold a rescue display earlier that day starting at 3pm. This is to be followed by a Go As You Please Race at 4.00pm.

On the following Sunday, there will be a Wreath Laying and Blessing of the Boats ceremony at 12.30pm. There will be more activity on the water with a RNLI Open Day, rowing races and the staging of the Maugherow Cup, for times and festival programme visit www.rossespointshanty.com/programme.html

About the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA)

The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority was established on the 1st of January 2007. The SFPA is independent in the exercise of its functions, which are below.

The principal functions of the Authority are:

  1. To secure efficient and effective enforcement of sea-fisheries law and food safety law
  2. To promote compliance with & deter contraventions of sea-fisheries law and food safety law
  3. To detect contraventions of sea-fisheries law and food safety law
  4. To provide information to the sea-fisheries and seafood sectors on sea-fisheries law and food safety law and relevant matters within the remit of the Authority, through the Consultative Committee established under section 48 of the above Act or by any other means it considers appropriate
  5. To advise the Minister in relation to policy on effective implementation of sea-fisheries law and food safety law
  6. To provide assistance and information to the Minister in relation to the remit of the Authority
  7. To collect and report data in relation to sea fisheries and food safety as required by the Minister and under Community law
  8. To represent or assist in the representation of the State at national, Community and international fora as requested by the Minister, and
  9. To engage in any other activities relating to the functions of the Authority as may be approved of by the Minister.
