#Jobs&Careers- The Marine Institute, the State agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation in Ireland, is currently seeking appointments to its Board.

The Marine Institute was set up under the Marine Institute Act 1991: "to undertake, to coordinate, to promote and to assist in marine research and development and to provide such services related to research and development, that in the opinion of the Institute, will promote economic development and create employment and protect the marine environment."

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine invites applications from qualified candidates for five vacancies on the board of the Marine Institute. Candidates must have demonstrable experience relevant to the work of the Institute in one or more of the following areas:

Shipping

Law

Seafood Industry Development

Scientific Research

Enterprise Development / Innovation

Candidates interested in the shipping and law opportunities should be able to demonstrate the following capabilities:

Shipping: Operational experience, at management level. in national and/or international shipping is required.

Experience in ship financing or leasing is desirable.

Law: Experience and/or knowledge of Public Administrative Law, European Environmental Law, Marine Law, or Corporate Law is required.

The closing date for submission of expressions of interest is the 24th of June 2015

#JOBS AND CAREERS-The Marine Institute's Student Training Programme for recent graduates is designed to provide work experience opportunities in an area in which they are interested.
As part of Fisheries Science Services, interested graduates will provide administrative support to the work activities of the Section Manager and Director. In addition the Stagiare may assist FSS personnel with fish sampling at ports and input of data into the FSS data base system.

Occasionally graduates may be required to assist with general laboratory duties and will also support the work of the Fisheries Science Services teams. For further information please download the full job description click this LINKand other stagiare programmes.

Duration of Contract: This temporary Stagiaire Graduate Training contract will be issued on a fixed-term, fixed-purpose basis for up to 50 weeks with a six-month probationary period.

About Warrenpoint Port

The Original Port of Warrenpoint was constructed in the late 1770s and acted as a lightering port for the much larger Port of Newry.

Following the demise of Newry Port Warrenpoint Harbour Authority was created as a Trust Port by legislation in 1971. The modern Port was completed in 1974 when it covered 28 acres. Since then the port has expanded to its current size of approximately 53 Acres. The Authority has just completed a £22 Million capital infrastructure project (under the terms of a Service of General Economic Interest with the Department for Regional Development) that includes, the construction of a 300 Metres of Deep Water Quay (7.5 Metres C.D), new Ro-Ro berthing facilities, additional lands and covered storage facilities and a new 100 Tonne mobile crane.

  • Warrenpoint Port is the second largest port in Northern Ireland and the fifth-biggest on the island of Ireland.
  • Warrenpoint Harbour Authority was created as a Trust Port by legislation in 1971.
  • In 2018, the value of goods moving through Warrenpoint Port was £6.5 billion. The Port handled 3.56 million tonnes in 2017, increasing to 3.6m in 2018.
  • The port employs 70 staff directly and supports over 1,500 in the local economy.
  • In addition to serving the markets in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, the Port deals with imports and exports from countries and regions across the world including to Spain, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Ukraine and the Americas.
