The official founding date of Glandore Harbour Yacht Club in West Cork is 1985.

“by a group of sailing enthusiasts from the shores of Glandore Harbour and further afield,” the club says, but history indicates that Glandore Regatta dates back much further – to 1830.

To increase interest in the club and possibly attract new members, it is offering ‘free try sailing’ sessions at an open day this Saturday, June 22, starting at 1:30 p.m.

These will be led by qualified instructors at 1330 and 1500 at 1630. Sessions can be booked by Emailing to:[email protected] All ages are welcome, the club says. “Walk-ins are welcome, but booking ensures a sail. Lifejackets and a change of clothing should be brought. Come and visit our clubhouse and talk to members about sailing.”

This is part of the club’s new Initiatives for 2024. Dragons, Squibs, cruisers and dinghies are sailed at Glandore.

“Maybe you’ve never raced before, maybe not even sailed, or maybe you’re an old hand; the Sailing Committee is keen to encourage everyone to get involved in club racing,” according to GHYC. The club’s sail training activities include a National Schools Programme ‘Taste of Sailing’ with local schools.

Glandore will hold the Dragons South Coast Championships from Friday, July 26 to Sunday, July 28, with six races planned, First Gun on Friday at 1300, Saturday 1100 and Sunday 1200. Notice of Race is on the club website.

Glandore Regatta is scheduled for August 17.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
