A Hunter Formula One day racer designed by Stephen Jones has been listed for sale in Greystones, Co Wicklow. The 6.7-metre sailing boat is offered at €3,000 and is currently located at Greystones Sailing Club.
Built in 1986, the Hunter Formula One is a lightweight daysailer and race boat designed for speed and responsive handling. The boat is typically sailed with up to four crew, but can also be handled by two sailors.
According to the seller, the boat — named Charlie Don’t Surf — underwent refurbishment in 2025. Work included new antifouling on the hull and replacement running rigging.
The boat comes with a lifting keel and a purpose-built road trailer and launching trolley. This allows the vessel to be dry-sailed or kept on a mooring or marina berth.
The sail inventory includes one battened mainsail, three headsails and two spinnakers. Additional equipment includes a compass, speed and depth gauge, racing tiller and aluminium spinnaker pole. An engine bracket is also fitted, suitable for a small 2–4hp outboard.
The boat has a beam of 2.44 metres and a displacement of approximately 1,000kg. Maximum draft is listed at 1.37 metres, with the hull constructed from fibreglass. The vessel offers four berths below deck.
The seller states that the interior is dry and that the internal chain plates have been strengthened. “All sail-handling hardware, including winches, cleats and pulleys, is in excellent condition,” the listing states.
Greystones Sailing Club has seen growing interest in the class in recent years. While looking for a cost-effective one-design keelboat racer, local members identified the Hunter Formula One as a solution. During the winter of 2022–2023, four boats were purchased and upgraded, leading to a dedicated start for the class at the Taste of Greystones Regatta.
The boat is available to view at Greystones Sailing Club in County Wicklow. Full listing of the Hunter Formula One day racer can be found here.
