A 1972 Nicholson 30 IOR Half Tonner, Challenge, has come to market in Crosshaven, Co Cork, offering a classic racer-cruiser option with proven pedigree.
Designed by Camper & Nicholsons, the 29ft yacht is one of 63 Nicholson 30s built and is understood to be hull number three. The design remains a recognised performer “around the cans” with a strong racing heritage.
The yacht is powered by a Beta 20hp diesel engine, fitted in 2000, and delivers a cruising speed of five knots with a top speed of six knots. A two-blade propeller is fitted.
Accommodation is arranged with a forward V-berth, saloon seating with two single berths, and a pilot berth to port. A compact galley includes a stainless steel sink, manual fresh water system and two-burner cooker with oven. The heads are located between the saloon and forecabin.
Rigged as a masthead sloop with a single set of spreaders, Challenge carries a slab-reefing mainsail, furling genoa and spinnaker. Standing rigging dates from 2003.
Deck equipment includes Harken self-tailing winches, coachroof winches with jammers, spinnaker sheet winches and a cockpit mainsheet track. The cockpit is deep and sheltered, with tiller steering and extension.
Navigation and electrics are straightforward, with a 12V system, bulkhead compass and VHF radio.
The broker notes that the yacht “requires a small bit of TLC but is priced accordingly”, adding that it represents “a lot of boat for the money” with potential as a club racer or entry-level cruiser.
