O'Dowd leads Europa Cup

13th June 2009

ImageDun Laoghaire sailor Matthew O'Dowd leads this weekend's Europa Cup in Aaabenraa, Denmark, after a first day in which the fleet was battered with gust of up to 40 knots. O'Dowd is just one point clear of last year's overall Europa Cup series winner, Jon Emmett, with just the final day's racing remaining.

O'Dowd, from the Royal St George Yacht Club,  started well with a bullet in the first race, which only half of the 42-boat Radial fleet managed to finish. With five races sailed, his worst finish has been an eighth place.

Aidan McLaverty of XXXX sits in tenth place, with Howth's Alan Ruigrok in 13th and Royal Irish YC sailor Saskia Tidey in 26th and Roland Clill in 32nd.

The event concludes on Sunday.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
