Welcome Green Dragon Home

26th June 2009

Sunday 12th July, Band Stand, East Pier, Dun Laoghaire: Ireland’s entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, Green Dragon finishes the race in St Petersburg this weekend and will be on its way to Ireland for a big Irish homecoming. Green Dragon one of only four boats to complete every leg of the race during the nine month period finished fifth overall and won three leg podium finishes. Since the epic began in Alicante in October 2008 the 11 crew led by skipper double Olympic Medallist Ian Walker have really endured life at the extreme with a broken boom, and nursing the boat from the coast of Taiwan to Qingdao. Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta and Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council are hosting a welcome home for Green Dragon on Sunday 12 July at 1400. So come along to the band stand on the East Pier and show your support and enjoy the free festivities with music and entertainment for all the family.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven’t put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full–time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
