More Irish Offshore interest

2nd May 2008

The drive to rekindle Ireland's love affair with coastal and offshore racing continues, this time with the first Irish feeder race of the season.

Chairman of the Irish Cruiser Racer Association (ICRA),Fintan Cairns, is recruiting entries for the 170-mile distance from Cork to Howth as part of the build-up to the Saab Cruiser Nationals in Howth starting on May 16th.

The Saab-sponsored event has already attracted the boats comprising Ireland's Commodore's Cup entry but there is a drive on to further boost the numbers of the Howth event. The entry list is just shy of the full 100, with 99 boats currently listed as entered.

As a means to make the race more attractive, a case is being made for polishing up a certain piece of silverware, the Kinsale Kettle, held in the Royal Cork and originally presented as a prize for racing between Queenstown (Kinsale) and Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire).

The ornate silver pot was first presented at the 1859 Queenstown regatta.

Sailing instructions and event information are available now at the official event website.
