Lough Derg lifeboat launched for cruiser

4th March 2009

Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat launched following a request from Valentia Coast Guard to go the assistance of two persons on board a cruiser that had gone aground South of Holy Island. The lifeboat with helm Margaret Ryan, Eleanor Hooker and Gavin Rea on board, launched at 13.00hrs.

Weather conditions were fair, with South Westerly winds Force 3 with sleety blustery squalls.  With an RNLI crew member aboard the casualty vessel, it was established that the persons were safe and unharmed and the vessel was not holed.  The cruiser was taken off the rocks and towed into safe water where a full check of engine and steering was carried out.  With a lifeboat crew member still on board and accompanied by the Lifeboat, the cruiser made her way to the safety of Mountshannon harbour. The lifeboat returned to Station and was ready for service again at 15.10hrs

Margaret Ryan, RNLI Helm for Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat commented on the importance of “always carrying on board, some means of calling for help”.
