Kinsale league opens Summer season

30th March 2009

It may have been a grey start but the 2009 season is underway with Kinsale's April League sponsored by Des McWilliam's One sails. Afloat's Bob Bateman was there to capture the action. The conditions were lively with a 20kt southerly breeze for this first race of five. The courses were set by Officer of the Day Alan Crosbie who sent the fleets out to Black Head. The sponsor Des McWilliam of One Sails will be kept busy this week as there were quite a number of damaged sails as crews got used to the conditions in what was for many of them the first race of the season.

All classes had clean starts, even with some vocal exchanges on approach. In Class 0 IRC Conor Phelan’s Jump Juice won with Anthony O’Leary’s Antix Dubh second and Kieran Twomey’s Gloves off third. In Class 0 Echo it was very tight with only 24 seconds separating the top 3 boats Jump Juice winning with Jonny Godkin’s Godot second and Antix third.

In Class 1 IRC David Scott’s Eos won with John Downing’s Samba second and Dan Buckley’s Justus third. In Class 1 Echo was also very close with only17 seconds separating the top 3 boats Justus came out on top, ahead of Samba and Eos coming third. Class 1 IRC Restricted had Eos winning ahead of Godot and Samba third.

In Class 2 IRC Shane Statham’s Slack Alice won with Bad Company co-owned by Desmond, Ivors and Deasy second and the McCarthy Brothers Mac Magic II third. In Class 2 Echo Gemini co-owned by O’Regan, Salter and Minehan won with Bad Company second and Slack Alice third.

Class 3 had two entrants in IRC with Outrigger co-owned by Nyhan and Buwalda beating Padraig O’Donovan’s Chameleon. In Echo Outrigger also won with Alan Bateman’s Pathfinder second and Chameleon third.

In Class 4 IRC Mike Sexton’s Granny Knot won with Alan Mulcahy on Sundancer second and Guinness Kahn co-owned by Ford and Good third. In Echo Guinness Kahn beat Granny Knot in second and Sundancer third.

The White Sail class was won by Kevin and Celia Murray on Objection! Peter Kelly’s Magic Elphin came second and David Ross’s Sonas finished in third place.

The club house was buzzing in Kinsale from 2.30pm onward as crews returned from the marina and it was great to see such a good turnout. Result here
