The European Boating Industry (EBI) has joined the EU’s Active Tourism coalition to strengthen its role in shaping the upcoming Sustainable Tourism Strategy. The coalition includes 20 EU-level associations across cycling, walking, hiking and water-based recreation.
Together, they are calling for the EU to recognise active tourism—including boating—as a key pillar of sustainable tourism.
The coalition's proposals urge the EU to allocate funding for coastal and inland waterway infrastructure in the 2028–2034 EU budget. This includes marina facilities, services, and better waterway connectivity.
“The aim is to ensure boating is not overlooked in tourism investment and planning,” the EBI said.
Boating contributes significantly to active tourism, with over 48 million Europeans participating annually. The sector generates €45 billion in revenue, supports 32,000 businesses and provides 280,000 jobs across Europe.
EBI said its involvement in the coalition is part of its broader effort to engage with EU institutions. The group argues that marinas and waterways are essential to Europe’s tourism economy and must be prioritised.
The Active Tourism coalition describes itself as a “constructive partner” to EU policymakers. Its shared proposals aim to integrate active tourism more deeply into future EU policy frameworks.
