An award-winning documentary on the battle by a fisherman after a mysterious environmental disaster devastated the northeast coast of England is due to be screened at Dublin's Irish Film Institute (IFI) on Tuesday, October 27th, and Thursday, October 29th.
All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea is described as “an intimate David-and-Goliath story about environmental collapse, community resilience and the cost of political indifference”.
Directed by award-winning British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, it charts how veteran Hartlepool fisherman Stan Rennie finds himself transformed from a lifelong fisherman into a reluctant campaigner.
Under Threat – A lobster pictured underwater in All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea, the documentary examining a mass shellfish die-off and one fisherman's campaign for answers on England's northeast coast.
As poisoned crabs and lobsters wash ashore and official answers fail to come, Rennie embarks on an extraordinary fight for justice, highlighting the impact of environmental damage on fishing communities.
Finlay, whose celebrated work includes Your Fat Friend, BIFA-nominated Seahorse, BIFA-winning Orion: The Man Who Would Be King and HBO's Emmy-nominated Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, returned to the beaches of her childhood to tell the full story as it unfolded on Teesside.
Produced by Charlie Phillips, whose producing and commissioning credits include the Oscar-winning Colette, BAFTA-winning The Black Cop and Finlay's acclaimed Seahorse, the documentary marks the pair's second feature collaboration.
The film features editing by Nicole Halová, cinematography by Mark Bushnell and an original score by Scottish composer Lomond Campbell.
All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea will be screened at the IFI in Dublin, with David O'Mahony describing it in the programme notes as a “powerful portrait of ordinary people confronting extraordinary circumstances”.
Screenings are on Tuesday, October 27th, at 6.10pm and Thursday, October 29th, at 6.15pm.
